The Unknown Masterpiece (A Cameo Concert)

SMCC presents two settings of the Mass in November 2009 in a Cameo Concert entitled "The Unknown Masterpiece". The choir will perform the late-Renaissance Missa Praeparata Corda Vestra by Italian composer Steffano Bernardi (1576-1636), and Mass in A minor by Romantic-era Czech composer Jan Vaclav Kalivoda (1801-1866). Artistic Director and musicologist Timothy J. Krueger will first present quotations from contemporaries of the composers, demonstrating that they were highly revered in their own day. Krueger will then elicit from the audience a discussion of what makes for enduring fame, and what leads to obscurity, with these two "unknown masterpieces" as examples.
